Form 2290 Amendment is the change that we make to the previously filed returns. The IRS allows the taxpayers to amend their filed IRS Form 2290 under the following scenarios.
3 Types of Amendments for IRS Form 2290
- Suspended Vehicles Exceeded the Mileage Use Limit
- Increase in Taxable Gross Weight of the Vehicle.
- VIN Correction
Suspended Vehicle Exceeded the Mileage Use Limit
If a suspended vehicle exceeds the mileage use limit, this tax becomes due. Mileage use limit of a vehicle on public highways is 5,000 miles or less (7,500 or less for agricultural vehicles). This mileage limit refers to the total mileage of a vehicle that is used on the public road during the tax period, in spite of number of owners.
Form 2290 tax calculation is based on the first usage of the vehicle in the given period. You need to file the amended Form 2290 and Schedule 1 by the last day of the month succeeding the month in which the mileage limit of the taxable vehicle was exceeded.

Increase in Taxable gross Weight of the Vehicle
If the taxable gross weight of a vehicle increases during the period or when the vehicle falls into a new higher weight category, you need to file this type of amendment. For example, the taxable gross weight of the vehicle may change if there is an increase in maximum load customarily carried. In such scenario, you must recalculate your tax and report the additional tax on the Form 2290. This must be filed by the last day of the month succeeding the month in which vehicle's taxable gross weight increased.

If you have filed a wrong Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) by mistake while reporting the Form 2290, then you need to file an amendment for VIN correction. The IRS also understands that errors may occur while entering the VIN due to the length of it and accepts it as a common mistake.
