E-filing a 2290 for the First time - What you need to know

If you are getting ready to e-file a 2290 for the first time, you will come to see that e-filing is the best method of completing your 2290 Heavy highway vehicle usage tax. The tax year of July 2016 to June 2017 began on July 1st 2016. The IRS does not release new Schedule 1’s until July 1st of every tax year. The deadline to e-file for a full tax year before receiving any penalties is August 31st of every tax year.

So you’ve made up your mind, you are done standing in line at the IRS office, filling out complicated paper work, and wasting money on stamps, envelopes, and paper. What steps must you take to make sure you are ready to e-file? Read below and never have to worry about paper filing a 2290 again.

First in order to e-file a 2290, you must have an EIN. EIN stands for “Employer Identification Number”. If you have an EIN you have used to file your 2290 in the past, you may use this number when e-filing. If you believe you have an EIN but do not remember the number, you may call the IRS’s EIN helpline at 1800-829-4933.

What if you do not have an EIN? Well, there is a solution for that too. Visit www.irs.gov. Under “TOOLS”, click on “Apply for an Employer ID Number”. Click on “Apply online now” to begin.

A commonly asked question is what if I do not have a business? What if I function as a Sole Proprietor, do I still need an EIN? The answer is yes, anyone that files a 2290, whether a business, person, etc, is required to have an Employer Id number. Keep in mind that if you are applying for an EIN for the first time, it takes 2 week for the new EIN to be established in the IRS database, so you will not be able to e-file for 2 weeks.

Secondly, once you have your EIN ready, you can Register with us. Once you click on “register here”, Fill out all the required registration details. ETAX2290 is an IRS-approved e-file provider with a team of experts ready to assist you through the whole process. Once registered, you will be prompted to enter your Business Information. Two details to keep in mind: The IRS only accepts Electronic checks in the form of Account and Routing number when e-filing. If you have a Taxable vehicle, make sure you have your check book handy. This does not apply to Suspended vehicles. Second, have a card handy for the e-filing fee. You will be charged the e-filing fee at the very end of the e-filing process. Once you complete your submission you will be emailed your receipt for the filing fee, a copy of your 2290 return, and a reference number.

The Last step is the easiest, just sit back and wait! The normal processing time is anywhere between a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the amount of submissions ahead of your or any delays the IRS might be experiencing. Once your form has been approved by the IRS, you will receive the Schedule 1 to your email. You can also print your Schedule 1 directly from your e-file provider’s website. If your return is rejected, you will also be emailed the reason why it was rejected. It is important to keep an eye on the status of your submission in case of rejection.

The IRS has made submissions available for the tax year July 2016 - June 2017. Paper filing will be a thing of the past, don’t be left behind. The IRS currently makes e-filing mandatory to those who own 25 trucks or more. If the IRS ever makes e-filing mandatory for everyone, now is a good time to get started and learn the ins and outs of e-filing. You are not alone if you have any questions regarding the e-filing process. You can contact ETAX2290’s team of experts at 703-229-0326.
